The Monacensia is closed for renovations until autumn 2015.

The Monacensia, an institute of the Munich Public Library, preserves the Munich municipal literary archives. Since 1977 the Monacensia is housed in the Hildebrandhaus, the former villa and studio of the artist and sculptor Adolf von Hildebrand (1847-1921).

The collection comprises more than 300 literary estates of important poets and writers who lived and worked in Munich. Among these Klaus and Erika Mann, Oskar Maria Graf, Annette Kolb, Frank Wedekind, Franziska zu Reventlow, Ludwig Thoma, Liesl Karlstadt, Therese Giehse, Herbert Achternbusch, Carl Amery and many more. Significant topics of the collection are literature in exile, Schwabinger Bohème about 1900, Bavarian and Munich literature in the 19th and 20th century and Munich folk singers.

A research library collects all publications on Munich themes (art, literature, architecture, history a.s.o.). The library can be used by all visitors.

Based on the own collections the Monacensia shows literary exhibitions and organizes readings, seminars and guided tours.
