new exhibition

June 7 until September 2, 2018

Pinakothek der Moderne | Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München

Olafur Eliasson (b.1967), a Danish artist with Icelandic roots, is undoubtedly one of today’s outstanding international artists. Like no other, he captivates audiences – both inside and outside museums – with his large-scale art projects. Within his work, which encompasses all media, the art of drawing continues to occupy a central place. Drawings serve to help Eliasson formulate his initial ideas, and he repeatedly consults them in the course of realizing projects. Indeed, one has the sense that the artist thinks in drawing. It is therefore surprising that his graphic oeuvre has, to date, only occasionally been presented in exhibitions. The extensive WATERcolours exhibition at the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München (SGSM) presents Eliasson’s graphic art in all its facets, showing nearly fifty works in a space of some eight hundred square metres. The curatorial concept is to reveal the close connection between his graphic art and his installations and to enable visitors to experience this sensually.
