One of Munich’s oldest middle class buildings houses the collection.  Since 2005 this 14th century structure has offered visitors this opportunity to experience the history of beer and the Munich Oktoberfest. The tour features ceiling paintings from 1340 and the open fireplaces ("black kitchens") from that period. In addition, the exhibit displays a brewing kettle (liquid boiler) from 1930, portraits of former Munich beer barons, photographs of earlier breweries, and glass show-cases with the standard one-liter beer mugs from clay steins to the modern glass mugs. Two silver coins from 1810 provide the transition to the second section of the museum. These were thrown into the crowd by Crown Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) and his wife Therese during their wedding festivities. The event is considered to be the first Munich Oktoberfest. The upper level of the museum is devoted to its history and various related topics for the "Wies’n". Appropriately, the museum restaurant also serves beer.

Preparations for this museum began in 1970. Carlo Proebst, the long-time chairman of the Society of Munich Breweries, donated the largest personal collection housed in the Monacensia (Munich city library) towards the expressed establishment of a beer museum. Over 12,000 specimens went to the city of Munich.
Extensive renovation in this oldest middle class building in Munich transformed the structure dating to 1340 into this Beer and Oktoberfest Museum which opened its doors in 2005. The building presents the culture of beer in old Bavarian fashion and displays aspects involving the craft of home brewing together with the expansion of the larger Munich breweries of the 19th century which have attained international recognition.
