The museum, approx. 450 m² exhibition area, is housed on the ground floor and the 1st floor in a building of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University. The permanent exhibitions "Earth's Crust and its Changes" and "Mineral Resources of the World" explain how the Earth functions: sedimentation, how mountains are formed, volcanoes and plate tectonics, but also the origins of mineral resources. The section "Rocky History of Bavaria" takes the visitor on a journey through millions of years of Bavarian Earth history. Visitors can study and grasp stones kept in open drawers. A special exhibition deals with the spectacular geology of Iceland located on the mid-Atlantic divergent boundary of the North American and the Eurasian tectonic plates. Another division is devoted to the geology of building stones exemplified by polished tiles in the floor. A newly acquired huge polished slab of "Untersberger Marmor" representing the first erosional debris of the Alps, is shown in geological details. This limestone is a very famous colourful rock from the Salzburg region widely used in public buildings all over Europe including Munich (e.g. Glyptothek, Propyläen, Alte Pinakothek).
