King Ludwig I established the New Pinakothek in the mid 19th century as the first public museum in Europe devoted exclusively to contemporary art. The Bavarian King thereby crowned his efforts and engagement for art and culture with this progressive initiative reflecting his passion which has influenced the character of the artistic city of Munich into modern times.
When the New Pinakothek was opened to the public in 1853 his collection laid the groundwork for the exhibit which today includes masterpieces by Jacques Louis David and Francisco Goya, then Friedrich Overbeck, Caspar David Friedrich, Adolph von Menzel and Max Liebermann, up to Gustave Courbet, Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, and Paul Gaugin. All this makes the New Pinakothek the storehouse of 19th century artistic development ranging from the enlightenment to the beginnings of "modern" art. The visitor experiences the aesthetic, cultural-historical, and mental transitions of the period and its mediating role between the Old Pinakothek and the Modern Pinakothek.

The original building was destroyed by the bombings of 1944/45. Today the unique collection of 19th century art held in high esteem by visitors from all over the world is housed in the gallery opened in 1981 which was designed by Alexander von Branca.
